Their work lives at the intersection of design, technology, and satire, with a particular interest in how internet culture shapes the way people encounter and spread ideas. El has art directed campaigns across print, web, interactive, and social media, earning recognition, including a District Gold ADDY and the Mosaic Award for multicultural advertising. Outside of design, they co-captain USF&#8217;s Awkward Silence improv troupe and have directed and performed in multiple sold-out theatrical productions.\n<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"btl-project\">\n      <h1 class=\"btl-project-title\">Code-Switching<\/h1>\n      <p class=\"btl-project-statement\">Ninety-nine percent of Fortune 500 companies now use some form of AI in their hiring process, screening candidates with everything from resume scanners to facial expression analysis. They can now reject someone in under a second and never once have to feel bad about it. These faceless tools are marketed as objective and bias-free, which would be pretty great if this were actually true. In practice, MIT and NIST studies have documented these tools downranking candidates with ethnically distinct names, penalizing people with disabilities through facial analysis, and even using zip codes as proxies for race and class. The bias was already present in the training data before the algorithm launched, and the innocuous branding and press releases made sure that nobody ever thought to question it.<br>\n<br>Code-Switching lets visitors experience this for themselves. The same logic that got Amazon&#8217;s hiring algorithm scrapped runs a fictional company called WholeYou, the kiosk booth at the center of this piece of satirical speculative fiction. Participants answer a few screener questions, get scanned by a webcam, and receive their very own personalized rejection (or the rare acceptance!) on a thermal receipt. The booth&#8217;s setup looks corporate enough to feel trustworthy until the receipt breaks down what actually just happened: which biases were used, the research behind them, and what the system was really looking at.
