Taymiya Zaman
Pronouns:
Major: Fine Arts
Taymiya Zaman is a historian, writer, and artist. She grew up in Karachi, Pakistan and is a professor of South Asian and Middle Eastern history at the University of San Francisco, where she has just completed an undergraduate degree in art. She turned to art because she realized that there are stories better told with a paintbrush than with words.
Queer Code
Taymiya’s thesis, “Queer Code,” in collaboration with Gianna Palanca, explores everyday acts of queer recognition and resistance. Questions that animate this body of work are: How do we recognize each other in a world that does not recognize us? What is the texture of our unspoken intimacies? Where do we gather and how do we disperse and disappear if needed? This collection invites the viewer into the field of meaning a queer gaze makes possible.
