Design Major and History Minor
What’s up, I’m Nick Lanza and I’m a graphic designer from the city of Upland in Southern California. San Francisco inspired me during my childhood visits, encouraging me to choose it for school. Despite lacking formal art or design experience, online designs ignited my passion for design. Now, with years of experience, I feel like a true designer, eager for the future.
Hidden Histories
In the murky depths of San Francisco’s history lies a treasure trove of forgotten tales, waiting to be unearthed. Intrigued by the city’s past, I was passionately drawn to the history of this hypnotizing city, eager to dive into its shadows, finding whispers of unrest, the echoes of technological breakthroughs, and remnants of cultural phenomena. As I ponder the question of what forgotten stories and “Hidden Histories” lie buried within San Francisco’s past, this project serves as my compilation of stories and events, illuminating the city’s stories to offer a deeper understanding of its journey through time. I employ the art of photography as my silent informant, unveiling hidden truths through the focusing lens of my camera. The project offers glimpses into forgotten landscapes and shadowy figures, helping me piece together the puzzle of history with visual clarity.
Hidden Histories presents a unique opportunity to merge three of my greatest passions: design, history, and photography. As an admirer of San Francisco, I am charmed by the city’s rich tapestry of stories and find comfort in viewing vintage photographs. Through the art of “rephotography,” I am drawn into an intriguing interaction between past and present, capturing the nature of historical moments while juxtaposing them against the evolving city. In essence, Hidden Histories becomes more than just a project; it is a journey of exploration, uncovering the layers of time that have shaped the city’s identity, allowing me to immerse myself in the intersection of my passions while paying homage to the timeless appeal of San Francisco’s history.
