Design Major

Hello, I was born in Michoacán, Mexico, but raised in Redwood City, CA. As a first-generation student, my lifelong dream has been to graduate from college and bring pride to my family. I am extremely grateful to my parents for the sacrifices they have made for me. Graduating as a design major was not something I initially imagined, but I am grateful to have found my passion.

De Mi Familia a La Tuya

De Mi Familia a La Tuya (From My Family to Yours) is a cookbook filled with recipes from seven families. When coming up with an idea, I wanted to answer the question of how the preparation and sharing of food influences family traditions, and how food traditions are passed down through generations. I grew up cooking with my mom, and I always looked forward to learning to cook family recipes. With this in mind, I wanted to design a cookbook that documents traditional recipes but also the memories behind those recipes.

In the making of De Mi Familia a La Tuya, I interviewed families about their upbringing and the relationships they have with cooking with the family. I was able to connect with each family and discover unique stories from recipes that were passed down from generation to generation. These interviews show the impact that food has on shaping their family traditions. I hope to honor the stories behind them and inspire future generations.

When designing this cookbook, my goal was to showcase the families and recipes through the photography taken. I wanted the tone of this cookbook to be celebratory of all the families involved. When introducing the families, I wanted each family to have a unique introduction, so I added a family portrait for each. Another important design decision I made, was capturing details from their homes that caught my attention and showcased their family’s essence. Other design decisions I made included selecting colors that complemented the images and kept that celebratory feel throughout the book, as well as going for a legible and easy-to-understand font for the instructions and the ingredients sections. Ultimately, I wanted to make a cookbook that reflected my love of family and food while incorporating my design skills.
