My creativity flourished through imperfect paths, shaped by mistakes that guided me here. Here, I have the privilege to uncover stories of preserving our Earth. To my Dad, who dedicated his weekends to build beside me, and to my Mom and Grason for their love and support. I love you!

Heirloom

Growing up in a world dominated by perfectly shaped and homogenized foods, I like many others, lacked a connection to the backbone of what sustains us. More recently, we see family farms dwindling, local farming practices will soon be distant memories. I found myself wondering about a seeds journey. Moving to San Francisco granted me greater access to farmers markets, where I began to witness firsthand the nature of real food – imperfect yet authentic, cultivated by the people of my community. Through this experience, I realized that seeds are more than just sustenance; it is a gift that bridges communities, highlights heritage, and fosters reciprocity.

In our society, seeds are often treated as a commodity rather than a gift from the Earth. Just as a cherished family heirloom holds stories of generations past, seeds carry the legacy of cultures and heritage. However, the commodification of seeds by large corporations threatens this sacred relationship, eliminating biodiversity and undermining local food systems. Through initiatives like seed saving and supporting ethical seed growers, this project aids to reclaim the tradition of nurturing and preserving seeds as vital contributors to our collective well-being. By fostering a culture of gratitude and reciprocity towards food and seeds, we can cultivate a more sustainable and interconnected future for all.

Considering this, I designed the framework of my project with the goal of fostering a deeper connection to seeds among the audience. Each packet is filled with seeds that come from different seed stewards around the country, accompanied by the seed stewards story. By shedding light on these narratives, my project seeks to not only connect but inspire others to engage with the rich practice of seed saving. The seed then becomes a gift for you- share it with others, draw on it, write a love letter to yourself, plant it or give it a new home.
